David Barrie is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and has made many long passages under sail.

After studying experimental psychology and philosophy at Oxford University, he served in the British Diplomatic Service, then worked in the arts and as a law-reform campaigner.

His first book, Sextant, was shortlisted for the Mountbatten Literary Award and won the Royal Institute of Navigation’s Certificate of Achievement.

His second book, Incredible Journeys (Supernavigators in North America) was The Sunday Times Nature Book of the Year in 2019.

David was a consultant for the spectacular National Geographic channel series, Incredible Animal Journeys (2023).

The great-great-nephew of the playwright, J. M. Barrie, he is married with two daughters and lives in London.
