40. John Rae - an appeal

The Hall of Clestrain

The Hall of Clestrain

This is the Hall of Clestrain, the house in which John Rae was born and raised. It looks out across the water to Stromness, in the Orkney Islands. And, as you can see, it badly needs repairs!

A campaign is now under way, organised by the John Rae Society, to raise funds for the complete restoration of the house. The plan is to set up a visitor centre and to provide employment and volunteering opportunities for local people.

It’s a worthy cause - to which I’ve recently made a contribution - and both Michael Palin and Ray Mears are Patrons.
